Leading a healthy life is something we all wish for. We are also all too familiar with setting health goals for ourselves with the honest intention of working towards it. But more often than not, we find ourselves struggling to fit the regimen we have set for ourselves in the template of our routine.
Add to this, extraneous factors such as long working hours, stress, commute, to-do lists and life events, we find our health goals taking an involuntary back seat.
So how do we ensure we meet our health goals easily and without the stress? Here are a few simple tips:
1. Discover what motivates you.
They may be simple things – You want to be more energetic and do more; you want look better in your clothes; you wish to feel more confident; you want to feel young or it may be as simple as improving your overall wellness. Set this as your main inspiration and get on to your health plan!
2. Make a plan.
A well chalked out regimen helps in measuring how far you have come and how many changes you have enabled in your lifestyle. Aim to fulfil your goals in phases. If you falter on the way, no problem. You can get back after a brief hiccup or two. Small steps will help you get there.
3. Make smart goals.
Labelling your goals in various categories will heap. Smart goals are doable goals. For example, if you are taking up walking, make a goal that helps you achieve it initially – “I will walk for 20 minutes every day.” If it is a change in your sleep schedule, you can say to yourself – “I will go to bed everyday at 10 pm and wake up at 6 am.” Your goals have to be clear, measurable, realistic and attainable.
4. Don’t give up.
Perseverance is the key to achieve your health goals. All of us falter or are sometimes unable to keep up with the set of rules we have laid for ourselves. If you stray off course, no problem. Simply start again. It would help to be aware of the bad habit that’s pulling you back and then take steps to overcome it.
5. Reward yourself.
It’s not just your physical self, but your mind needs gratification too. Whenever you achieve a certain measure in your goal, reward yourself. For example, if you are following a strict, healthy diet for some time, reward yourself one day with a dessert you love.
6. Take it nice and slow.
Many make the mistake of doing everything at once. You need not combine a strict diet, waking up very early, rigorous exercise all together at once. Baby steps will help you get there. Spend the first two weeks trying to achieve one goal from your list. Once you have established some good habits, add on some more. Bad habits are not easy to discard and may take time. Don’t be disheartened, simply go on.
7. Be aware of what you are eating.
Tracking subconsciously of what you are eating is a good idea to keep a tab on your calories. This does not mean extreme denial or monitoring. It will help if you are conscious of what you eat so that you can allow yourself an indulgence occasionally.
8. Choose nutrition over fad diets.
Crash diets are ineffective in the long run and sometimes may prove counter-production. Losing weight quickly affects your body functioning and there’s every chance you may gain weight as quickly. If necessary, consult a dietitian to give you some tips and tricks.
Reaching your health goals is simple and easy if you follow some simple tips and tricks. The key is not to stress yourself by setting impossible goals but take it one step at a time and have a measurable plan.
