It’s summer and all the air-conditioners in our homes are in full swing. Yet, summer can interfere with a good night’s sleep because our bodies are exposed to extreme heat and a certain amount of dehydration through sweating. Here are some tips to cool off before you sleep:
Wear loose cotton clothing
Before going to bed, be sure your nightwear is airy, comfortable and made from cotton. This ensures your skin breathes and any sweat is absorbed and not left on your body making you uncomfortable.
Make your bedroom sleep-friendly
Creating the right environment for you to sleep is very important. If you are sleeping in an airconditioned room, the ideal temperature is 20 0 C. Take a shower before you sleep. You will not only feel rejuvenated but you’ll find yourself nodding off to sleep sooner!
Turning off all the plug sockets can help keep things cool and save some energy as well! Electric sockets generate a fair amount of heat.
Watch what you drink before bedtime
Alcohol and sleep make very nasty bed partners. While drinking before going to bed is never a great idea, it only worsens during the summer months. Keep a cool glass of water by your bedside instead and take sips if you wake up thirsty or feel dehydrated.
Shut out the sun
Keeping the blinds and curtains drawn during the day time prevents the rooms from overheating. A cool, undisturbed night’s sleep awaits you in your air-conditioned bedroom!
Pamper your pulses
To cool out super-fast, apply ice packs or cold compresses to your pulse points – wrists, neck, elbows, groin, ankles and behind the knees. Your body temperature will come down and you will find it easier to doze off.
Get those bedroom lights right
Keep your bedroom in soft, dim light before your sleep. Bright lights generate heat and also fool the brain into thinking it’s daytime leading to active neuron activity. All this means it will take longer for you to fall asleep.
Summer nights are long but they can be made comfortable by being prepared. All it requires is a little bit of effort and in no time those ZZZs will take over helping you wake up fresh even in the warmer months.
