Drug Information Phenobarbital is a long-acting barbiturate. It depresses the sensory cortex, reduces motor activity, changes cerebellar function and produces drowsiness, sedation and hypnosis. Its anticonvulsant

Alert contraindicated in case of Severe resp depression, acute intermittent porphyria. Severe renal and hepatic impairment. Intra-arterial and SC admin.

Drug Special Care Do not stop taking phenobarbital without talking to your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking phenobarbital, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, muscle twitching, uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body, weakness, dizziness, changes in vision, nausea, vomiting, seizures, confusion,difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or dizziness or fainting when getting up from a lying position. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually.
Drug Drug Interactions May reduce plasma levels of oral anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin, dicoumarol, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon), corticosteroids, griseofulvin, doxycycline, Na valproate and valproic acid. May increase CNS depressant effect w/ phenytoin, antihistamines, sedative/hypnotics, tranquilisers. May prolong the effect w/ MAOIs. May reduce the effect of estradiol, progesterone, estrone and other steroidal hormones.
Drug Pregnancy Interaction Category D: There is positive evidence of human foetal risk, but the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk (e.g., if the drug is needed in a life-threatening situation or for a serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective).

How to take the Medicine
Consumption Info Phenobarbital comes as a tablet and an elixir (liquid) to take by mouth. It is usually taken one to three times a day. it is also available as ampoule and vial forms
Drug quanitty Parenteral Status epilepticus ; Emergency management of acute seizures Adult: As phenobarbital Na: 200-600 mg. Child: As phenobarbital Na: 100-400 mg. Elderly: Reduce dose. Renal impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Hepatic impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Reconstitution: Dilute w/ most IV infusion soln (e.g. NaCl 0.45% or 0.9%, lactated Ringer's, dextrose 5%, Ringer's). Incompatibility: Y-site: Pantoprazole, amphotericin B cholesteryl sulfate complex. Syringe: Ranitidine, hydromorphone, sufentanil. Parenteral As a hypnotic Adult: 100-320 mg. Do not admin for >2 wk for the treatment of insomnia. Elderly: Reduce dose. Renal impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Hepatic impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Reconstitution: Dilute w/ most IV infusion soln (e.g. NaCl 0.45% or 0.9%, lactated Ringer's, dextrose 5%, Ringer's). Renal impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Hepatic impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Intravenous Preoperative sedation Child: 1-3 mg/kg pre-op. Renal impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Hepatic impairment: Reduce dose. Severe: Contraindicated. Reconstitution: Dilute w/ most IV infusion soln (e.g. NaCl 0.45% or 0.9%, lactated Ringer's, dextrose 5%, Ringer's). Incompatibility: Y-site: Pantoprazole, amphotericin B cholesteryl sulfate complex. Drug Dose to be taken parenterally (i.v and i.m)
Excess Drug Consumption overdosage may cause Drowsiness, dysarthria, ataxia, nystagmus, disinhibition, hypotension, hypotonia, hyporeflexia, hypothermia, absent bowel sounds, cardiac arrest, resp and CV depression, shock leading to renal failure, prolonged coma. Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Admin activated charcoal w/in 1 hr prior to ingestion. Maintain adequate airway. Admin dopamine or dobutamine in severe hypotension. Perform haemodialysis or charcoal haemoperfusion in renal failure.
Forgot Drug Consumption Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
