Onglyza 5 mg Tablet is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults when diet and exercise alone cannot control blood sugar levels. It is the first-line therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes that restores the body's response to insulin. It contains Saxagliptin, which increases insulin production after meals when blood sugar is high. It may cause common side effects such as hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels), upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis (infection of nose and throat with common cold) and headache. Before taking this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of its components or if you are pregnant/breastfeeding, and about all the medications you are taking and pre-existing medical conditions.

Drug-Drug Interaction: Onglyza 5 mg Tablet interacts with an anti-depressant (bupropion), drugs used to treat glaucoma, antibiotics (cephalexin, ciprofloxacin), anti-acidity drugs (cimetidine), heart condition drugs (digoxin), anti-HIV drugs (dolutegravir), ethanol, saliva reducing drugs (glycopyrrolate), iodinated X-ray contrast agents, anti-epileptic drugs (topiramate, lamotrigine), heart-related chest medicine (ranolazine). Other drug interactions can contribute to increased low blood sugar, including sex hormones (androgens), anti-oxidants (alpha-lipoic acid), painkillers (aspirin), anti-TB drugs (prothionamide), growth hormones (pegvisomant), and other antidiabetic medicines.

Drug-Food Interaction: Intake of excessive alcoholic beverages may increase the chance of a life-threatening condition known as Lactic Acidosis. So, avoid intake of alcoholic beverages with Onglyza 5 mg Tablet .

Drug-Disease Interaction: Onglyza 5 mg Tablet  should be used with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis/pancreatic disease and renal dysfunction.

How does the drug interact with Onglyza 5 mg Tablet:
Coadministration of Onglyza 5 mg Tablet with Gatifloxacin may sometimes affect blood glucose levels. Both high blood glucose and, less frequently, low blood glucose have been reported.

How to manage the interaction:
Although there is a possible interaction, Onglyza 5 mg Tablet can be taken with Gatifloxacin if prescribed by the doctor. Consult the doctor if you experience nervousness, confusion, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, nausea, hunger, weakness, perspiration, palpitation, rapid heartbeat, urination, thirst, and hunger. Monitoring blood glucose levels is advised. Do not discontinue any medications without first consulting your doctor.

Coadministration of Bexarotene and Onglyza 5 mg Tablet can increase the risk of developing pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

How to manage the interaction:
Co-administration of Bexarotene and Onglyza 5 mg Tablet can lead to an interaction, it can be taken if advised by your doctor. However, if you experience any symptoms like persistent nausea, vomiting, abdominal tenderness, and upper abdominal pain, especially that which is made worse after eating or radiates to the back, consult your doctor immediately. Do not discontinue any medications without first consulting your doctor.
