I developed stretch marks after delivery. Please suggest effective methods to reduce stretch marks on my body.

Stretch marks after delivery are very common and happen because the skin stretches during pregnancy, and the body's hormones affect the skin's elasticity. These marks are harmless and usually become lighter over time, although they may not disappear completely. Keeping the skin well moisturised can help improve its texture and appearance. You can regularly apply moisturising creams, cocoa butter, coconut oil, almond oil, or lotions containing vitamin E or hyaluronic acid to reduce dryness and support skin healing. Eating a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc, drinking enough water, and maintaining a healthy weight may also help improve skin health gradually. Gentle exercise after delivery, if approved by your doctor, can also support overall skin tone and recovery. If the stretch marks remain very noticeable, dermatological treatments such as microneedling, laser therapy, chemical peels, or radiofrequency treatment may provide better improvement, especially for older or deeper marks. Results vary from person to person, and it is important to have realistic expectations because no treatment can remove stretch marks completely. If you are breastfeeding, avoid using strong medicated creams unless prescribed by a doctor. Consulting a dermatologist can help you choose the safest and most suitable treatment for your skin type.
I have stretch marks on my stomach after weight loss. What should I do to reduce them?
Dr. S Aneela
M. Pharm (Pharmacology)., PhD
Stretch marks usually appear after weight loss when the skin stretches and shrinks faster than its elastic fibres can adjust. They commonly develop on the stomach, thighs, arms or hips and may appear red, purple, brown or silvery depending on skin tone as well as age of the marks. Rapid weight changes, hormonal shifts, muscle gain, pregnancy or family tendencies can make them more apparent. Complete removal is difficult, but their appearance fades gradually over time. Management usually focuses on improving the skin texture and supporting collagen repair. Moisturisers containing cocoa butter, hyaluronic acid, tretinoin creams or vitamin E may help some people when used regularly. Keeping hydrated and maintaining a stable weight may prevent new marks from appearing prominently. Dermatological procedures such as microneedling, chemical peels, laser therapy, or radiofrequency treatment can sometimes improve deeper stretch marks more effectively. If the marks appear suddenly with unusual weight changes, steroid medicine use, or hormonal symptoms, further evaluation may be useful.
