I have had chronic major unipolar depression and anxiety for 20 years. I am currently taking paroxetine 50 mg, lamotrigine 200 mg, and buspirone 10 mg, but still feel low mood and memory issues. Is there any additional treatment that can help improve my mood and memory?

With a long history of depression and anxiety that has not fully improved, this may be a form of treatment-resistant depression, where symptoms continue despite standard treatment. Your current medicines: Paroxetine, Lamotrigine, and Buspirone, are commonly used, but sometimes the combination or doses need adjustment. A psychiatrist may consider options such as changing medications, adding another antidepressant or mood-stabilising agent, or using newer treatments. Non-medication therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), regular exercise, good sleep, and stress management can also significantly improve mood and cognitive symptoms like memory. In some cases, advanced treatments such as rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) or ECT may be considered if symptoms remain severe. It is important to have a detailed review with your psychiatrist to personalise your treatment plan safely and improve both mood and memory over time.
