About Firazol 20mg Tablet

Firazol 20mg Tablet is a prescription medicine used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It is commonly prescribed to help heal acid damage in the oesophagus, treat painful stomach ulcers, and manage symptoms of severe acid reflux. By lowering the amount of acid your stomach produces, it provides relief and allows your digestive tract to heal.

For the best results, you should take Firazol 20mg Tablet consistently every day, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is typically taken once daily in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast. Making simple lifestyle adjustments, such as eating smaller meals and avoiding eating late at night, can also significantly improve how well this medicine works.

While taking Firazol 20mg Tablet, some people may experience mild side effects like headaches or occasional diarrhoea. These symptoms usually go away on their own, but you should contact your doctor right away if you experience severe diarrhoea, persistent muscle spasms, or joint pain. Always consult your healthcare provider if you notice any unusual or worsening symptoms.

Talk to your doctor before taking Firazol 20mg Tablet if you have a history of severe liver damage or osteoporosis. Do not take this if you are allergic to similar acid-reducing medicines, as this can trigger a severe allergic reaction. Your doctor will help determine if this medication is safe for your specific health needs.

This medicine can interact with certain other treatments, such as specific blood thinners or antifungal medications, by changing how your body absorbs them. Let your doctor know if you drink alcohol or smoke regularly, as these habits can increase stomach acid and reduce the effectiveness of your treatment. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are an older adult, talk to your doctor or pharmacist to ensure it is safe for you.

Uses of Firazol 20mg Tablet

Firazol 20mg Tablet may be prescribed for the following acid-related gastrointestinal conditions:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Firazol 20mg Tablet helps by reducing the backflow of stomach acid into the food pipe, which relieves painful heartburn and prevents acid-induced irritation.
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease: It aids in healing painful sores that develop on the lining of your stomach or upper small intestine by keeping acid levels low enough for the tissue to repair itself.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: In this rare condition, where the stomach produces extreme amounts of acid, Firazol 20mg Tablet helps control and lower acid production to safe, manageable levels.
  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Infection: When used alongside antibiotics, Firazol 20mg Tablet lowers stomach acid to create an environment where the antibiotics can effectively clear the bacterial infection.

How Firazol 20mg Tablet Works

Firazol 20mg Tablet contains rabeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that helps reduce the production of stomach acid. It works by blocking proton pumps, which are specialised structures in the stomach lining responsible for releasing acid into the stomach. By inhibiting these pumps, rabeprazole significantly lowers the amount of acid produced. This reduction in stomach acid helps relieve symptoms associated with acid-related conditions and creates a less irritating environment in the stomach and oesophagus. As a result, it supports the healing of inflamed tissues, erosions, and ulcers while helping to prevent further acid-related damage.

FAQs

Firazol 20mg Tablet is used to treat duodenal ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (reflux of gastric contents into the oesophagus), heartburn, erosive oesophagitis (acid-related damage to the lining of the oesophagus), infections caused by Helicobacter pylori when given along with an antibiotic, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Firazol 20mg Tablet works by blocking the action of the enzyme known as gastric proton pump that is responsible for the production of acid. This helps in reducing the amount of acid produced, heals the ulcers and prevents the formation of new ulcers.

Do not take Firazol 20mg Tablet for longer than prescribed by your doctor. If long-term treatment is required, regular medical follow-up may be necessary. Prolonged use may increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium levels, bone fractures, and certain gastrointestinal infections. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist or if you require treatment beyond the recommended duration.

Do not stop taking Firazol 20mg Tablet without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better or your symptoms have improved. Stopping treatment too early may allow your condition to return or prevent complete healing. Continue taking Firazol 20mg Tablet for the duration prescribed by your doctor.

Diarrhoea might be a side-effect of Firazol 20mg Tablet. Drink lots of fluids and eat non-spicy food if you experience diarrhoea. If you find blood in stools (tarry stools) or if you experience severe diarrhoea, consult your doctor. Prolonged intake of Firazol 20mg Tablet is linked with a greater risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea, so if you develop diarrhoea that does not improve, immediately consult a doctor.

Dry mouth could be a side effect of Firazol 20mg Tablet. Limiting caffeine intake, avoiding smoking and mouthwashes containing alcohol, drinking water regularly, and chewing sugar-free gum/candy might help stimulate saliva and thereby prevent dry mouth.

On long-term treatment, Firazol 20mg Tablet might increase the risk of fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids.

Firazol 20mg Tablet should be used with caution in the elderly as it may cause bone weakness and increased risk of fractures if taken for longer duration.

Inform your doctor before taking Firazol 20mg Tablet if you are due to have Chromogranin A blood test. Firazol 20mg Tablet may cause abnormal blood and liver enzyme values. Inform the person doing the tests that you are taking Firazol 20mg Tablet. This medicine may cause dizziness and sleepiness, so drive only if you are alert.

Long term treatment with Firazol 20mg Tablet may cause malabsorption of vitamin B12 leading to its deficiency. Consult the doctor if you notice symptoms of cyanocobalamin deficiency like tiredness, sore mouth, mouth ulcers and pins & needles sensation.

Firazol 20mg Tablet is usually best taken on an empty stomach, preferably about 30 minutes before a meal, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Taking it before food helps it work more effectively by reducing stomach acid production.

Side effects of Firazol 20mg Tablet include headache, dizziness, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence (wind), weakness, and runny nose. Consult the doctor if the side effects persist or worsen.

The safety of this medicine during pregnancy is not fully established. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor to weigh the benefits and risks.

While alcohol does not directly stop the medicine from working, drinking alcohol can irritate your stomach lining and make your acid reflux symptoms worse. Talk to your doctor for personalised advice.

No, you should swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Crushing or chewing it damages the special coating that protects the medicine from stomach acid. Talk to your pharmacist if you have difficulty swallowing pills.
