Zidovudine and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They resemble the natural building blocks that HIV uses to make new viral DNA. When the virus mistakenly uses these medicines instead of the normal building blocks, the DNA chain stops growing prematurely, preventing HIV from reproducing. Together, these medicines lower the amount of HIV (viral load) in the body, allowing the immune system to recover and reducing the risk of HIV-related illnesses. They control HIV infection but do not cure it.
