Emtricitabine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), a type of antiviral medicine that blocks an enzyme HIV needs to make copies of itself. This helps reduce the amount of virus in the body and slows the progression of the infection.  Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), a type of antiviral medicine that also blocks the same enzyme HIV uses to reproduce. By interfering with the virus's ability to make the genetic material it needs to reproduce, it prevents HIV from multiplying and spreading to new cells.  Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), a type of antiviral medicine that attaches to the enzyme at a different site and stops it from working properly.
