Drug Information Polymyxin b sulfate is used for: Treating serious infections caused by certain bacteria. Polymyxin b sulfate is a polypeptide antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.

Alert Do NOT use polymyxin b sulfate if: you are allergic to any ingredient in polymyxin b sulfate

Avoid Drug no data
Drug Special Care Patients w/ pre-existing nitrogen retention. Renal impairment. Pregnancy and lactation. Patient Counselling Eye drop/oint may cause temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances which may affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Monitoring Parameters Monitor renal function; neurologic symptoms; signs of superinfection.
Drug Drug Interactions Potentially Fatal: Additive neurotoxic or nephrotoxic effect w/ bacitracin, streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, cephaloridine, paromomycin, viomycin, colistin. Increased risk of resp paralysis w/ neuromuscular blockers (e.g. anaesthetics, muscle relaxants).
Drug Pregnancy Interaction Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters).

How to take the Medicine
Consumption Info Polymyxin B is an antibiotic primarily used for resistant Gram-negative infections. It is derived from the bacterium Bacillus polymyxa.
Drug quanitty Topical/Cutaneous Skin infections Adult: As 0.1% soln or oint in combination other drugs: Apply onto affected area 1-3 times daily. Child: Same as adult dose.

General Information Facial flushing, fever, rash, pruritus, urticaria, skin exanthema, eosinophilia, dizziness, ataxia; severe pain at inj sites (IM), thrombophlebitis (IV) at inj sites. Ophth: ocular discomfort, keratitis, eye irritation. Potentially Fatal: Nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity (higher doses or in patients w/ renal impairment); resp paralysis, anaphylaxis, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea and pseudomembranous colitis.
