My 6-month-old daughter, who underwent open-heart surgery 1.5 months ago, has been developing red, itchy patches on her body since around 4 months of age. These rashes usually appear in the evening or at night and seem to cause significant discomfort, as she cries for 30 minutes to 1 hour when they occur. We have been using Lacto Calamine lotion as advised by a doctor. A paediatrician said it may be normal, but we are concerned, given her recent surgery, and would like to know whether this requires further evaluation or specific treatment.

Red, itchy patches that appear mainly in the evening or at night are often seen in conditions such as eczema, heat rash, or allergic skin reactions. These are quite common in infants and are usually related to sensitive skin, sweating, dry weather, or exposure to irritants such as soaps, detergents, or certain fabrics. The fact that she becomes very uncomfortable and cries for a long time suggests that the itching may be significant and needs proper assessment. Her previous heart surgery is unlikely to be directly related to these skin rashes, but it is still important to inform her doctor about all ongoing symptoms and any medicines she is taking. Continue using mild skin care products, keep her skin well moisturised with a gentle fragrance-free moisturiser, and avoid overheating. Dress her in soft cotton clothing and keep her nails short to prevent scratching. Since the rashes are recurrent and causing distress, a review by a paediatrician or dermatologist is advisable for proper diagnosis and targeted treatment.
