Povil MS Ointment belongs to the class of medications called 'antiseptic and disinfectant,' primarily used to treat and prevent skin infections in minor burns, cuts, and abrasions (the first layer of skin is scraped off). A wound occurs when your skin is injured or broken, resulting in tissue or skin damage, bleeding, or infection.

Povil MS Ointment is a combination drug containing Metronidazole, Povidone-Iodine and Sucralfate. Povidone iodine works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. Metronidazole inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death, thereby killing the bacteria. Sucralfate helps form a protective barrier over the wound to promote healing. Collectively, Povil MS Ointment helps treat cuts, wounds and infections.

Povil MS Ointment is for external use only. As with every medicine, Povil MS Ointment has common side effects. These include local swelling, itchiness, redness, small blisters, and irritation at the application site. These side effects gradually resolve during the treatment and do not require medical attention.

Brief your medical history to the doctor if you are allergic to iodine or povidone. Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), thyroid disease, liver, or kidney problems. Using Povil MS Ointment during breastfeeding may increase the iodine levels in breast milk, which can cause hypothyroidism in breastfed infants. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive before using Povil MS Ointment.

Do not use Povil MS Ointment if you are allergic to povidone-iodine. Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), any other thyroid diseases, or liver and kidney problems since using Povil MS Ointment can cause iodine absorption into the body. Using Povil MS Ointment during breastfeeding may increase the iodine levels in breast milk, which can cause hypothyroidism in breastfed infants. Povil MS Ointment can cause excessive iodine absorption with its vaginal use; hence, avoid douching (washing) with Povil MS Ointment and iodine-containing tampons during breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive before using the Povil MS Ointment since it can affect the unborn baby.
