I have been experiencing body aches for a long time and suspect it is due to a Vata dosha imbalance. What medicine should I take?
Dr. S Aneela
M. Pharm (Pharmacology)., PhD
Long-term body aches can have many causes, including vitamin D deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, arthritis, thyroid disorders, poor sleep, stress, or muscle problems. In Ayurveda, such symptoms may be attributed to a Vata imbalance, but it is important to rule out medical causes first. Ayurvedic medicines such as Mahayograj Guggulu or Dashmoolarishta are sometimes used for joint and muscle discomfort under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician. Regular exercise, stretching, adequate sleep, hydration, and a balanced diet can also help. If the pain is persistent, widespread, or associated with weakness, numbness, or joint swelling, please consult a doctor and consider testing for vitamin D, vitamin B12, thyroid function, and inflammatory conditions.
I was diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) and am currently taking weekly Avonex 30mcg injections and monthly Uprise D3 softgel capsules. I have been experiencing extreme fatigue and weakness for the last six months; what medications or supplements can I take to help reduce this fatigue?
Vikas Singh
M Pharmacy
Fatigue is a common symptom of MS and can also be a side effect of weekly Avonex. First, consult your neurologist to check your thyroid levels, blood counts, and to ensure your monthly Uprise D3 dose is maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels. For medical management, your doctor may prescribe FDA-approved medications for fatigue, such as Amantadine or Modafinil. Regarding supplements, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and Acetyl-L-Carnitine have shown some benefit in clinical studies for MS-related fatigue. Please do not start any new medications or supplements without consulting your physician first to prevent drug interactions.
My Vitamin D 25-hydroxy level is 5.3, and I am feeling worried about this very low result. How should I proceed now, and what treatment or supplements should I take to improve it safely?
Veda Maddala

A Vitamin D 25-hydroxy level of 5.3 is considered very low and usually indicates significant deficiency, which can contribute to symptoms like bone or muscle pain, fatigue, weakness, low mood, and sometimes frequent body aches. The good news is that this condition is very common and usually improves well with proper supplementation and lifestyle changes. Treatment typically involves a higher-dose Vitamin D supplement initially to quickly correct the deficiency, followed by a maintenance dose later to keep levels stable. Along with supplements, getting safe sun exposure (early morning or late afternoon) for about 15-20 minutes on a few days a week can naturally help your body produce Vitamin D. Including dietary sources like fortified milk, eggs, and fish can also support recovery, although diet alone is usually not enough to correct severe deficiency. It is also important to ensure adequate calcium intake because Vitamin D and calcium work together for bone health. A repeat blood test is usually done after a few weeks or months to check for improvement. If you have persistent bone pain, weakness, or other health conditions, a doctor's review is important to tailor the dose safely and monitor recovery.
How many of these are to be consumed? Is it daily or weekly?

Uprise-D3 60K Soft Gelatin Capsule contains a high-strength dose of vitamin D3. The dose and duration of treatment vary depending on your vitamin D levels, age, and underlying medical condition. Your doctor will decide the appropriate treatment schedule after evaluating your individual needs. Do not take this medicine more often or for longer than prescribed, as excessive vitamin D intake may cause harmful effects. Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has advised.
My doctor has prescribed Uprise D3 60K to take once daily for 3 days, followed by once weekly for 12 weeks. However, I accidentally continued taking it once daily for 8 consecutive days. Is there any risk from this overdose, and what should I do now?
Chandrakanta Jena
Pharm D
Taking Uprise D3 60K once daily for 8 days, rather than the planned 3 days, is unlikely to cause serious harm in most healthy adults. This medicine contains Cholecalciferol (a form of vitamin D), and short-term extra doses may slightly raise vitamin D levels, but serious toxicity is rare at this level of use. However, very high vitamin D levels over time may increase blood calcium levels, leading to symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, constipation, increased thirst, frequent urination, or weakness. Since you have taken 5 extra doses, stop taking it daily and return to your original once-weekly schedule as advised by your doctor. Do not take any more extra doses. If you notice any unusual symptoms or if you have kidney disease or other medical conditions, please inform your doctor. In most cases, no treatment is needed, but your doctor may suggest a blood test if required.
