The dark, flaky skin is a normal and expected part of the healing process as dead tissue sheds. Since the wound is closing, you can stop using silver sulfadiazine. Continue using mupirocin ointment only if there are still raw, open patches to prevent infection. To promote healing and prevent scarring, keep the area well-hydrated by applying plain petroleum jelly or a fragrance-free moisturizer daily. Once the skin is completely closed and no longer raw, you can start applying a silicone-based scar gel. Crucially, protect the healing skin from the sun with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent permanent dark marks.
