The Numbers: How Much Weight Can You Lose?
This is the most common question patients ask: What are the realistic results?
To answer this, we look to the clinical trials known as the STEP (Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with Obesity) trials. The most prominent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, followed nearly 2,000 adults without diabetes for 68 weeks.
Here is the breakdown of the findings:
Average Weight Loss
In the clinical trials, adults taking Wegovy lost an average of 15% of their initial body weight.
To put this into perspective, people in the placebo group (who only followed a diet and exercise plan without the drug) lost only about 2.4% of their body weight.
Translating Percentages to Pounds
What does 15% look like in real life?
- If you weigh 200 pounds, a 15% loss is 30 pounds.
- If you weigh 250 pounds, a 15% loss is 37.5 pounds.
- If you weigh 300 pounds, a 15% loss is 45 pounds.
Significant Milestones
The study highlighted that the weight loss was significant for the vast majority of participants:
- 86% of participants lost at least 5% of their body weight.
- 69% of participants lost at least 10% of their body weight.
- 50% of participants lost at least 15% of their body weight.
- Nearly one-third of participants lost 20% or more of their body weight.
It is vital to note that these results were achieved over a period of 68 weeks (about 16 months). Wegovy is designed for steady, sustainable weight loss, not a rapid drop that is quickly regained.
