When liver function is reduced, digestion can become slow, which may lead to gastric problems such as bloating, discomfort, and poor appetite. Constipation is also common in people with cirrhosis due to reduced bowel movement, low fluid intake, less physical activity, or side effects of medicines. You should follow a liver-friendly diet with small, frequent meals. Include soft, fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, but avoid very oily, spicy, and processed foods. Drink enough water if your doctor has not restricted fluids. Regular light walking can also help improve bowel movement. Avoid alcohol completely, as it may further damage the liver. Do not take painkillers or laxatives without medical advice because some medicines can be harmful in liver disease. It is important to have regular check-ups with your doctor to monitor liver function and adjust treatment.

I am suffering from hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis. What should I do to manage my condition and prevent further liver damage?

Hepatitis B with liver cirrhosis means your liver is already scarred and needs careful long-term care to prevent further damage. You should regularly follow up with your doctor or liver specialist, who may prescribe antiviral medications (such as tenofovir or entecavir) to help control the hepatitis B virus and slow disease progression. It is very important to avoid alcohol completely, as even small amounts can worsen liver damage. Eat a healthy, balanced diet with fresh, home-cooked food, enough protein, and plenty of fluids, unless your doctor has restricted them. Avoid oily, spicy, and processed foods, and reduce salt if you have swelling in the legs or abdomen. Do not take any over-the-counter medicines, painkillers, or herbal products without medical advice, as they may harm the liver. Regular blood tests, liver scans, and cancer screening are needed to monitor your condition. Get vaccinated against other infections, such as hepatitis A and influenza, if advised. With proper treatment, diet, and regular monitoring, further liver damage can be reduced, and complications can be prevented.
