वसायुक्त मछली (टूना, ट्राउट, सैल्मन और मैकेरल), मछली के लिवर का तेल, अंडे की जर्दी और बीफ लिवर विटामिन डी के अच्छे स्रोत हैं। प्लांट मिल्क, डेयरी, जूस और ब्रेकफास्ट सीरियल जैसे विटामिन डी से भरपूर खाद्य पदार्थ भी विटामिन डी के अच्छे स्रोत हैं।
आहार या भोजन के माध्यम से पर्याप्त विटामिन डी न मिलना, सूरज की रोशनी का कम संपर्क में आना, लीवर या किडनी जैसे अंगों का शरीर में विटामिन डी को उसके सक्रिय रूप में बदलने में असमर्थ होना, और ऐसी दवाएं लेना जो विटामिन डी के अवशोषण (absorption) में बाधा डालती हैं, विटामिन डी की कमी का कारण बन सकते हैं।
जिन लोगों को विटामिन डी से एलर्जी है, जिन्हें हाइपरविटामिनोसिस डी (विटामिन डी का उच्च स्तर), हाइपरकैल्सीमिया (कैल्शियम का उच्च स्तर) या मैलाब्सॉर्प्शन सिंड्रोम है, उन्हें आइवोकाल डी3 60के चबाने योग्य टैबलेट नहीं लेना चाहिए।

विटामिन डी की कमी से बच्चों में रिकेट्स (हड्डियाँ नरम, कमजोर और टेढ़ी हो सकती हैं) और वयस्कों में ऑस्टियोमलेशिया (एक हड्डियों का विकार जिससे मांसपेशियों में कमजोरी और हड्डियों में दर्द होता है) हो सकता है।
यदि डॉक्टर सलाह दें, तो आइवोकल डी3 60के चबाने योग्य टैबलेट के साथ अन्य दवाएँ ली जा सकती हैं। डॉक्टर को बताएं कि क्या आप कोई अन्य दवा ले रहे हैं, विशेष रूप से एंटीबायोटिक्स, कोलेस्ट्रॉल कम करने वाली दवाएँ, एंटीकॉन्वल्सेंट, थायराइड की दवाएँ और हड्डियों के नुकसान के इलाज के लिए इस्तेमाल की जाने वाली दवाएँ।
