About Vepio-SM Ointment

Vepio-SM Ointment belongs to the class of medications called 'antiseptic and disinfectant,' primarily used to treat and prevent skin infections in minor burns, cuts, and abrasions (the first layer of skin is scraped off). A wound occurs when your skin is injured or broken, resulting in tissue or skin damage, bleeding, or infection.

Vepio-SM Ointment is a combination drug containing Metronidazole, Povidone-Iodine and Sucralfate. Povidone iodine works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. Metronidazole inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death, thereby killing the bacteria. Sucralfate helps form a protective barrier over the wound to promote healing. Collectively, Vepio-SM Ointment helps treat cuts, wounds and infections.

Vepio-SM Ointment is for external use only. As with every medicine, Vepio-SM Ointment has common side effects. These include local swelling, itchiness, redness, small blisters, and irritation at the application site. These side effects gradually resolve during the treatment and do not require medical attention.

Brief your medical history to the doctor if you are allergic to iodine or povidone. Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), thyroid disease, liver, or kidney problems. Using Vepio-SM Ointment during breastfeeding may increase the iodine levels in breast milk, which can cause hypothyroidism in breastfed infants. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive before using Vepio-SM Ointment.

Uses of Vepio-SM Ointment are as follows:<br/>Treatment of Infected Skin Wounds: The combination is very effective for treating skin infections caused by both bacteria and fungi, as well as for preventing wounds from becoming prone to infection.<br/>Ulcer Prevention and Treatment: It is effective in treating and preventing ulcers and wound infections in both acute and chronic circumstances. Sucralfate protects the ulcerated area, while metronidazole and povidone iodine combat any bacterial or microbial infections that may impede the healing process.<br/>Rosacea and Acne: The metronidazole component is often used to treat rosacea, a chronic skin disorder that causes facial redness, irritation, and, in some cases, pustules. The lotion may help reduce inflammation and bacterial activity during rosacea flare-ups.<br/>Post-surgical Wound Care: Following specific skin procedures, this combination can be used to prevent infection while promoting faster healing by protecting the skin and reducing the bacterial burden.<br/>Burns: It can also be used to treat minor burns, particularly those that are at risk of infection or are not healing adequately. The povidone iodine prevents infection, while sucralfate protects the healing tissue.

How Vepio-SM Ointment Works

Vepio-SM Ointment is a combination of three drugs: Metronidazole, Povidone-Iodine and Sucralfate. Povidone iodine works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. As a small molecule, iodine in Vepio-SM Ointment can easily penetrate microorganisms and oxidise essential proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. Metronidazole inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death and ultimately killing the bacteria. Sucralfate helps form a protective barrier over the wound, promoting healing. Collectively, Vepio-SM Ointment helps treat cuts, wounds and infections.

What if I have taken an overdose of Vepio-SM Ointment

Though overdose is unlikely due to low systemic absorption, it is advised to avoid exceeding the recommended dose. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Drug Warnings

Do not use Vepio-SM Ointment if you are allergic to povidone-iodine. Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), any other thyroid diseases, or liver and kidney problems since using Vepio-SM Ointment can cause iodine absorption into the body. Using Vepio-SM Ointment during breastfeeding may increase the iodine levels in breast milk, which can cause hypothyroidism in breastfed infants. Vepio-SM Ointment can cause excessive iodine absorption with its vaginal use; hence, avoid douching (washing) with Vepio-SM Ointment and iodine-containing tampons during breastfeeding.
