I am experiencing sudden, severe knee pain. What could be the cause?

Sudden, severe knee pain can happen due to several common reasons, such as a ligament injury, a meniscus tear, a flare-up of arthritis, or conditions like Gout (caused by uric acid buildup), especially if there is swelling, redness, or difficulty walking. Sometimes even a minor twist or strain can trigger sharp pain. For relief, you can rest the knee, avoid putting weight on it, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, keep the leg slightly elevated, and take a mild pain reliever if needed. However, if the pain is very severe, comes with swelling, redness, fever, or does not improve within a few days, it is important to consult a doctor for proper examination and tests like X-ray or MRI to find the exact cause and treat it correctly.
I am having pain on the left side near the hip. X-ray (AP and lateral view) is normal. Could this be iliotibial band syndrome, a muscle strain, or a tear?

If your X-ray is normal, the pain near your left hip is most likely due to a soft tissue problem, such as a muscle strain, ligament sprain, or Iliotibial band syndrome, rather than a bone issue. These conditions can cause pain on movement, walking, or pressing the area, and usually happen due to overuse, sudden movement, or minor injury. In most cases, it improves with rest, avoiding heavy activity, gentle stretching, and using a hot pack; you can also take a mild pain reliever if needed. However, if the pain is severe, does not improve within a few days, or is associated with weakness or difficulty walking, you may need further evaluation, such as an MRI, to rule out a muscle tear or other issues. It is best to consult a doctor if symptoms persist.
