Key Nutrients for Infant Development
Every cell, tissue, and organ requires a specific mix of essential nutrients for infants. The following are the most critical ones to understand.
Protein
Protein builds muscle, enzymes, and immune proteins. Breast milk provides whey-dominant protein that is highly digestible. Follow-on formulas use processed whey and casein blends calibrated to match this profile as closely as possible.
DHA
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid that concentrates in brain grey matter and the retina. Adequate intake during infancy is associated with better visual acuity and cognitive scores in early childhood, making it one of the key baby growth nutrients to prioritise.
Iron
Iron is among the most commonly deficient minerals in infants worldwide. It is essential for haemoglobin formation and, critically, for myelination of nerve fibres in the developing brain. Term breastfed babies typically have sufficient iron stores until around six months, after which dietary iron becomes important.
Zinc, Vitamin D, and Calcium
Zinc supports cell division, DNA synthesis, and immune response. Deficiency can slow growth and increase susceptibility to infections.
Vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption and bone mineralisation. Most infants, regardless of feeding method, receive inadequate sunlight exposure to meet vitamin D needs, making dietary or supplement sources important.
Calcium works alongside vitamin D to build the skeletal framework. Breast milk delivers calcium in a highly bioavailable form, and formula is adjusted to compensate for lower bioavailability from processed calcium salts.
Other vitamins for infant development include vitamin A for vision and immune function, vitamin K for blood clotting (administered at birth in most hospitals), and B-complex vitamins for energy metabolism.
