What Is Iron Fortification and Why Does It Matter for Babies?
Iron fortification means adding iron compounds, most commonly ferrous sulphate, ferric ammonium citrate, or electrolytic iron, to a food during manufacturing so that the final product contains more iron than it would naturally. In the context of baby food, the goal is simple: to close the gap between what an infant's diet provides and what their rapidly growing body needs.
That gap is significant in India. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019-21) found that approximately 67% of children aged 6 to 59 months were anaemic, with iron deficiency being the leading cause. Exclusive breastfeeding is protective in the early months because breast milk iron is highly absorbable, but it is not sufficient once growth accelerates and iron stores from birth begin to fall, typically around four to six months.
Iron fortified baby food, including cereals, pureed foods, and iron fortified infant formula, exists precisely to fill this window.
Why is iron added to infant formula?
Infant formula is designed to match breast milk nutritionally, but cow's milk, the base for most standard formulas, is naturally low in iron and the iron it contains is poorly absorbed. Manufacturers add iron, most commonly as ferrous sulphate, to bring formula in line with infant iron requirements. Iron fortified infant formula has been shown in multiple studies to reduce the incidence of iron deficiency anaemia compared to low-iron alternatives.
