About Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment

Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment is a topical medicine used to treat and prevent infections in skin wounds, cuts, scrapes, and ulcers. It works by targeting a wide variety of germs, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other susceptible microorganisms, to keep the affected area clean and promote recovery. This treatment is commonly prescribed for minor burns, diabetic foot ulcers, and surgical wounds.

For the best results, you should apply this medicine consistently at the same times each day as directed by your healthcare provider. Clean the affected area gently before application, and do not skip any applications even if the wound begins to look better. Incorporating a nutrient-rich diet and keeping the wound clean and protected can significantly support the healing process.

While using Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment, you may experience mild local side effects such as temporary burning, redness, or dryness at the application site. These symptoms are usually mild and resolve on their own as your skin adjusts to the medication. However, if you experience severe skin irritation, swelling, or a spreading rash, stop using the product and consult your doctor immediately.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment if you have a history of thyroid problems, kidney issues, or large open wounds. Do not use this medicine if you have a known allergy to any of its active components. It is also not recommended for use over very large surface areas of the skin without medical supervision.

Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment is generally safe when used as directed, but it should not be applied at the same time as other topical skin treatments unless recommended by your doctor. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing health conditions as an elderly individual, consult your healthcare provider to ensure this medication is safe for your specific situation.

  • Surgical wounds: It is applied to surgical incisions to protect the healing skin from post-operative infections.
  • Minor burns: Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment shields damaged skin from environmental bacteria, reducing the risk of complications during the recovery phase.

Key Benefits

The following are the benefits of Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment:

  • Helps treat bacterial and other susceptible skin infections.
  • Reduces redness, swelling, and discomfort associated with infected wounds.
  • Supports faster healing of infected skin and wounds.
  • Helps prevent the infection from spreading or becoming worse.

  • Provides targeted treatment directly at the site of the infection.

Directions for Use

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the affected area.
  • Gently clean the wound with mild soap and water or saline solution, then pat it dry with a clean towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment to the affected skin area, covering the wound completely.
  • If advised by your doctor, cover the treated area with a sterile bandage or gauze dressing.
  • Wash your hands again immediately after applying the medicine to prevent spreading it to other areas.
  • Always follow your doctor's exact instructions regarding how often to apply this medicine and how long to continue the treatment.

How Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment Works

Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment contains two active components that work together to combat skin infections effectively. • Povidone iodine: It is a trusted antiseptic that releases active iodine when applied to the skin. This iodine rapidly destroys essential proteins and cell structures of a broad range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa (tiny single-celled parasites), and many bacterial spores (dormant forms of bacteria that are difficult to kill), rendering them harmless and helping keep the wound surface clean. • Metronidazole: It is an antimicrobial agent that specifically targets anaerobic bacteria, which are organisms that thrive in environments with low oxygen levels, such as deep wounds or tissue crevices. Inside these bacteria, the medicine is converted into reactive compounds that damage their DNA, preventing them from multiplying and allowing the infection to clear.

What if I have taken an overdose of Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment

An overdose is unlikely when Metrogyl-P 2% Ointment is applied to small areas of intact or mildly damaged skin as directed. However, prolonged use over large open wounds or extensive burned areas may increase the amount of iodine absorbed into the body. This can rarely lead to iodine toxicity (too much iodine in the body), which may cause a metallic taste in the mouth, excessive saliva, or affect thyroid function, especially in people with thyroid disorders or kidney impairment. If the medicine is accidentally swallowed or if it is applied to exceptionally large areas of open skin, causing unusual symptoms, seek immediate medical attention or contact a local poison control centre.

Diet & Lifestyle Advise

  • Eat high-protein foods: Lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and tofu provide the essential building blocks your body needs to rebuild damaged skin tissues.
  • Stay well-hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain skin elasticity and ensures optimal blood flow, which delivers nutrients to the wound site.
  • Manage blood sugar levels: If you have diabetes, keep your blood glucose within your target range, as high blood sugar can delay tissue repair and make infections harder to clear.
  • Avoid tobacco products: Smoking reduces oxygen levels in the blood and impairs circulation, which significantly slows down wound healing.
  • Keep the wound protected: Avoid picking at scabs or scratching the wound, as this introduces new bacteria and delays healing.
