Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes and commonly causes high fever, severe body pain, joint pain, weakness, headache, and rash. Joint pain can sometimes continue for weeks or even months after the fever improves because the virus may trigger prolonged inflammation in the joints and muscles. Treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms and supporting recovery because there is no specific medicine that completely removes the virus. Doctors commonly use paracetamol for fever and pain relief, along with adequate fluids, rest, and light, nutritious meals. Gentle movement and stretching may help reduce joint stiffness gradually once the fever settles. Many people feel very weak during recovery, so proper sleep and hydration are important. Avoid self-using strong painkillers or steroids without guidance, especially during the early phase of illness. Persistent severe joint pain, dehydration, breathing difficulty, confusion, or inability to walk comfortably may require additional medical care and monitoring during recovery.
