I have been taking Castophene tablets daily for several years to manage constipation. Is it safe to use them long-term? If not, what safer alternatives can I use for long-term use?
Long-term use of Castophene tablets (Phenolphthalein) is not considered safe, as it may lead to dependency, affect bowel function, and cause electrolyte imbalances or severe dehydration. For long-term management of constipation, safer alternatives include increasing dietary fibre, staying well hydrated, exercising regularly, and using bulk-forming laxatives such as ispaghula husk or methylcellulose.
