I am married but not pregnant. I am noticing milk discharge from my breasts. Is this a cause for concern?
Milk or milky discharge from the breasts when you are not pregnant or breastfeeding is called galactorrhea. It is not always serious and can happen for many reasons, such as hormone changes (especially high prolactin), certain medicines, thyroid problems, stress, or frequent nipple stimulation. Sometimes no clear cause is found, and it may go away on its own. However, if the discharge continues, comes from one duct only, is bloody or coloured, or is associated with lumps, irregular periods, headaches, or vision changes, you should see a doctor for proper evaluation and tests. A healthcare provider can check hormone levels, rule out pregnancy, and identify any underlying condition that may need treatment.
