My 16-month-old child has had a cough for the past two days. What should I do?

A cough lasting two days in a young child is often due to a mild viral infection and usually resolves on its own. Ensure your child is well hydrated, continues regular feeding, and gets enough rest. You may use saline drops if the nose is blocked. Offer warm liquids or use a cool-mist humidifier to soothe your child's throat. Please avoid giving over-the-counter cough medicines, as they are not recommended for toddlers. Monitor for warning signs such as fast or difficult breathing, high fever, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness. If any of these occur or the cough persists beyond a few days, consult a paediatrician promptly.
