I have been diagnosed with depression and have been taking duloxetine 20 mg and clonazepam 0.5 mg for a long time. I would like to stop antidepressants. How can I safely change or discontinue these medications?
You should not stop medications like Duloxetine and Clonazepam suddenly, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms (such as anxiety, dizziness, sleep problems, or mood worsening) and relapse of depression. The safest approach is to consult your doctor, who can gradually reduce (taper) the doses over weeks to months, depending on how long you have been taking them and how stable your symptoms are. Clonazepam especially needs slow tapering to avoid dependence-related effects. Alongside this, non-medication approaches like counselling (such as cognitive behavioural therapy), regular exercise, good sleep, and stress management can help you stay well after reducing medicines. If you notice any return of depressive symptoms during tapering, inform your doctor promptly. With proper supervision, many people can safely reduce or stop medication when appropriate.
