My daughter has had loose motions and fever since last night. Although we consulted a doctor and were advised oral rehydration solution, she is not eating or drinking and prefers to sleep. She also has abdominal pain. What steps should I take next?
Loose motions with fever and poor intake in a child can quickly lead to dehydration, so the most important step is to keep trying small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution (ORS) even if she is not willing to drink much at once; use a spoon or syringe every few minutes, and continue breastfeeding or light fluids if applicable. It is normal for children to eat less during illness, but fluids are essential. You can also give paracetamol for fever as advised by your doctor and keep her comfortable. However, since she is mostly sleeping, not drinking well, and has abdominal pain, you should watch closely for signs of dehydration such as reduced urination, dry mouth, no tears, or unusual drowsiness; if any of these are present, or if she continues to refuse fluids, has persistent vomiting, worsening pain, or high fever, you should take her to a doctor for further evaluation and possible IV fluids.
