Is there any special diet that may help reduce epilepsy symptoms or control seizures better?

Certain diets may help some people with epilepsy, especially when seizures are difficult to control with medicines alone. The ketogenic diet is the most well-known dietary approach and works by changing how the brain uses energy. In some children and selected adults, it may help reduce seizure frequency, but it usually needs careful medical and nutritional supervision because it is a strict high-fat, very low-carbohydrate diet. Some people may also benefit from modified Atkins or low glycemic index diets, which are slightly easier to follow. Good hydration, regular meals, proper sleep, and avoiding alcohol or seizure-triggering foods may also support better seizure control. Skipping meals, severe stress, sleep deprivation, and uncontrolled blood sugar can sometimes increase seizure risk in certain individuals. Diet alone may not replace epilepsy medicines in most cases, especially if seizures are frequent or severe. Sudden increase in seizures, confusion, loss of consciousness, or injury during seizures can indicate poor seizure control and may need adjustment of treatment and monitoring.
