I have ear pain and may need ear wax cleaning. I also experience ear pain while travelling to high-altitude places. Please suggest what I should do.

Ear pain during travel to high-altitude places is commonly caused by pressure changes inside the ear. When altitude changes quickly, the pressure inside and outside the ear may not balance properly, leading to pain, blockage, a popping sensation, or reduced hearing. Earwax buildup can sometimes worsen this discomfort by blocking the ear canal. If you feel fullness in the ear, reduced hearing, or repeated blockage, you may need a proper ear examination and wax cleaning by an ENT specialist. Avoid trying to clean the ear yourself with earbuds, pins, or sharp objects, as this can push the wax deeper or injure the ear. During travel, chewing gum, swallowing frequently, yawning, or gently blowing with the nose closed and mouth shut may help equalise ear pressure and reduce pain. Staying hydrated and avoiding travel with a severe cold or nasal congestion may also help. Steam inhalation and keeping the nose clear can improve pressure balance in the ears. If wax buildup is confirmed, doctors may use safe ear drops or perform professional cleaning. You should consult an ENT specialist if the pain is severe, associated with hearing loss, dizziness, discharge from the ear, fever, or if symptoms continue repeatedly during travel. Early treatment usually helps prevent worsening discomfort and improve ear health.
