I have redness on the foreskin and a burning sensation at the tip of the penis for the past 10 days. I used Exderm-NM ointment, but the redness keeps recurring. What could be the cause, and what treatment should I follow?
Redness of the foreskin along with a burning sensation at the tip of the penis is commonly caused by conditions such as fungal infection, bacterial infection, irritation from soaps or creams, poor hygiene, friction, diabetes, or inflammation of the foreskin and glans, known as balanitis. Since the redness keeps returning even after using Exderm-NM ointment, the underlying problem may not be fully treated, or the ointment itself may be temporarily suppressing the symptoms without curing the cause. Many mixed creams like Exderm-NM contain a steroid along with antifungal or antibiotic medicines, and prolonged or repeated use without proper diagnosis can sometimes worsen infections or make them recur more frequently. It is important to avoid self-medication and get examined by a dermatologist or urologist for proper evaluation. In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry by washing gently with plain water and drying properly afterwards. Avoid harsh soaps, perfumed products, tight underwear, and sexual activity until the irritation improves. If you are diabetic or have not checked your blood sugar recently, it would be advisable to do so because uncontrolled diabetes can increase the risk of recurrent genital infections. A doctor may recommend tests such as urine examination, blood sugar testing, or swab tests, depending on your symptoms and may prescribe specific antifungal, antibacterial, or anti-inflammatory treatment based on the exact cause. Seek medical attention sooner if you develop discharge, swelling, fever, difficulty passing urine, ulcers, or worsening pain.
