My child has had a fever for the past 24 hours, along with vomiting and difficulty breathing. I have given him paracetamol syrup, but the fever keeps coming back after a few hours. What should I do?

Difficulty breathing along with fever and vomiting may sometimes be a sign of a serious infection or another condition that needs urgent medical attention. Since your child has had these symptoms for 24 hours, please have your child assessed by a doctor or paediatrician as soon as possible. If your child is struggling to breathe, breathing very fast, making grunting sounds, has the skin pulling in under the ribs, or develops blue, grey or very pale lips or skin, seek emergency medical care immediately. Paracetamol syrup can lower fever and relieve discomfort, but the fever may return after its effect wears off. Give paracetamol only at the dose recommended for your child's age and weight, and do not give more than advised. Offer small, frequent amounts of fluids to help prevent dehydration, particularly if your child is vomiting. Do not give antibiotics or other medicines unless prescribed by a doctor.
