Babies born to mothers with hepatitis B can usually be protected effectively if preventive treatment is given early after birth. The most important step is timely hepatitis B vaccination, which is normally recommended within the first 24 hours of life. Many newborns also receive hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) soon after delivery because it gives additional immediate protection against the virus, especially when the mother is hepatitis B positive during pregnancy. The baby should follow the full hepatitis B vaccine schedule on time, because completing all doses is important for long-term protection. Breastfeeding is generally considered safe if the baby has received a proper vaccination and there is no active bleeding from the nipples. Regular pediatric follow-up may include blood testing later in infancy to confirm that the baby developed protection and did not acquire the infection. Missing vaccine doses or delaying preventive treatment can increase the risk of hepatitis B transmission. Fever, poor feeding, yellowing of the eyes, or unusual sleepiness in the baby should be evaluated carefully.
