I have been suffering from frozen shoulder for the last 1 year, and I am also a diabetes patient. Could my diabetes be causing this problem, and what treatment can help improve my shoulder movement and pain?
Frozen shoulder is more common in people with diabetes, especially when blood sugar remains high for a long time. High sugar levels can affect the tissues around the shoulder joint, causing stiffness, inflammation, pain, and reduced movement over time. Many people with diabetes develop difficulty lifting their arms, reaching behind their backs, or sleeping comfortably because of shoulder pain and tightness. Improving diabetes control may help reduce further worsening of stiffness, but frozen shoulder usually also needs physical treatment and regular movement exercises. Gentle stretching, physiotherapy, posture correction, warm compresses, and shoulder mobility exercises may gradually improve flexibility and reduce pain. Recovery is often slow and may take several months, so regular exercise and patience are important. Avoid keeping the shoulder completely inactive for long periods because this may increase stiffness further. At the same time, sudden heavy lifting or forceful movements can worsen pain. Some people may require medicines, injections, or additional treatment depending on the severity of symptoms and movement restriction. Consult a doctor or physiotherapist if the pain becomes severe, movement continues to decrease, or the arm becomes very weak or numb.
