I have been suffering from constipation for the past 8 months and rarely feel the urge to pass stools. I have been taking Gutclear syrup 10 ml daily as advised by a child specialist, but I still pass only a small amount of stool. I also need to use an enema once a week. Please suggest a permanent solution for this problem.

Long-term constipation with very little urge to pass stools and frequent need for enemas may happen due to slow bowel movement, low fibre intake, inadequate water intake, poor bowel habits, lack of physical activity, stress, or certain medical conditions affecting the intestines or nerves. Since you have been facing this problem for 8 months despite taking medicines, it is important to get properly evaluated by a gastroenterologist or physician instead of depending regularly on enemas, as frequent enema use can sometimes make the bowel less responsive over time. A long-term solution usually involves improving bowel habits and identifying the exact cause. Try to drink plenty of water daily and increase fibre intake gradually through fruits, vegetables, oats, whole grains, salads, and soaked dry fruits, as fibre helps soften and bulk up stools naturally. Regular physical activity, such as walking and setting a fixed time each day for bowel movements, especially after breakfast, may help train the intestines. Avoid delaying the urge to defecate whenever it occurs. Your doctor may adjust the type or dose of stool softener or prescribe other medicines that improve bowel movement more effectively if needed. Sometimes blood tests, thyroid tests, or scans may be advised to rule out underlying problems. You should seek medical attention sooner if you develop severe abdominal pain, vomiting, weight loss, blood in stools, or persistent bloating. With proper evaluation, diet changes, hydration, regular exercise, and the right medical treatment, many people experience significant improvement in chronic constipation over time.
