My child suddenly cries at midnight for no clear reason. Could you please suggest possible reasons for this and what we can do to help?
Sudden crying in children at midnight can have several common causes, and most are not serious. The child may be having nightmares or night terrors, which can make them wake up frightened but unable to explain properly. Hunger, wet diapers, feeling too hot or cold, or discomfort from teething can also disturb sleep. Sometimes minor illnesses, such as an ear infection, a blocked nose, stomach pain, or acidity, can cause night waking and crying. In some cases, worms or itching in the anal area may disturb sleep. To help your child, try to maintain a calm bedtime routine with regular sleep and wake times. Make sure the child has a light meal before bed, is comfortable, and the room is quiet and at a suitable temperature. Comfort the child gently when they wake up, but avoid too much stimulation. If crying occurs frequently or if there is poor feeding, breathing difficulty, or unusual movements, it is important to consult a paediatrician for proper evaluation.
