I first had diarrhoea, and now I keep feeling like passing stool, but nothing comes out, and I am going to the toilet around 20 times in 24 hours. What should I do now, and what should I eat or avoid?

A frequent urge to pass stool after diarrhoea is usually due to irritation of the bowel, making you feel like going even when little or nothing comes out. Keep yourself well hydrated with small, frequent sips of water or oral fluids to replace lost fluids, and eat light, easy foods like rice, banana, curd, or toast so the gut can settle. Avoid spicy, oily, or heavy foods and do not strain in the toilet, as this can worsen the irritation, and rest as much as possible to help recovery. You can also take warm fluids to soothe the stomach and reduce discomfort. If you develop a fever, bloody stool, or weakness, it needs attention. Consult a doctor if the symptoms do not improve or become severe.
