My child has had a severe cough for the last 4 weeks. The cold symptoms are better now, but the cough is still strong, especially while lying down, and mucus comes out with coughing. What can help relieve this lingering cough and mucus?

A cough that continues for weeks after a cold is often caused by leftover airway irritation, mucus dripping from the nose into the throat, an allergy, or slow recovery of the air passages after infection. Many children cough more while lying down because mucus collects in the throat and triggers coughing during sleep. Bringing out mucus with coughing can actually mean the body is trying to clear the airways. Keeping the child well hydrated may help thin the mucus and make coughing easier. Steam inhalation, saline nasal drops, warm fluids, and sleeping with the head slightly raised may also reduce nighttime coughing. Some children improve with mucus-loosening syrups or anti-allergy treatment if nasal drainage continues after the cold. Since the cough has lasted around 4 weeks, it is better not to ignore it completely. Persistent cough can sometimes happen with sinus infection, allergy, asthma-related irritation, or lingering chest infection. Fever, wheezing, weight loss, breathing difficulty, or poor activity levels need medical attention.
