I went for a routine eye check-up for my spectacle power, and the doctor prescribed Lacrimos 1% eye drops twice daily to be used until the bottle is finished. He said the drops are for cleaning and lubricating the eyes and have no side effects. Since I do not have any eye symptoms, should I still use these eye drops?

Lacrimos 1% eye drops contain carboxymethylcellulose, which is an artificial tear solution used to lubricate and moisturise the eyes. These drops are commonly prescribed for mild dryness, irritation, eye strain from screen use, dust exposure, or reduced blinking, even when symptoms are not very noticeable. During a routine eye examination, the doctor may sometimes find early dryness on the eye surface and prescribe lubricating drops to protect and comfort the eyes. In general, these drops are considered safe and do not contain steroids or antibiotics. Most people use them without any problems. However, a few people may experience mild, temporary effects such as blurred vision, stickiness, or slight irritation just after putting the drops in. If you truly have no symptoms, the drops may not be absolutely necessary, but using them for a short period is usually harmless. If you are unsure, you can consult your eye doctor again to find out why they were prescribed in your specific case before continuing them regularly.
