A cough in a 5-year-old that has just started today is most often due to a viral cold, throat irritation, or mild allergy, and in many cases, it improves on its own over a few days. Levolin syrup (levosalbutamol) is mainly used when a cough is associated with wheezing, a tight chest, or bronchospasm, such as in asthma-like symptoms. If your child only has a simple dry or wet cough without wheeze or breathing difficulty, it may not provide much benefit and is not routinely needed. Right now, supportive care is more important. Keep her well hydrated with warm fluids, give light meals, and use steam inhalation or warm mist in the room to ease throat irritation. Avoid cold drinks, dust exposure, and sudden temperature changes. If there is nasal blockage, saline drops can also help reduce post-nasal drip that triggers coughing. Watch closely for warning signs like fast breathing, wheezing, chest indrawing, persistent fever, or worsening cough. If any of these appear, or if she is not improving in a few days, she should be examined by a paediatrician for proper assessment and treatment.
