If you have had Vitiligo for many years, treatment can still help, especially if the patches are stable (not increasing in size). Doctors usually start with medicated creams such as mild steroids or non-steroid creams that help control the immune response in the skin and may gradually bring back some colour. Light therapy (phototherapy) is one of the most effective options for long-standing vitiligo, as regular sessions can stimulate pigment cells and improve skin colour over time. If the patches have been stable for a long period and do not respond to creams or light therapy, procedures like skin grafting or pigment cell transplantation may be considered to restore colour in selected areas. In some cases, newer treatments may also be suggested depending on availability and your skin condition. Along with these, using sunscreen regularly is important to protect the skin and reduce the contrast between normal and affected areas. Since every person responds differently, it is best to consult a dermatologist who can assess whether your vitiligo is active or stable and suggest the most suitable treatment plan for you.
