A boil under the lip is usually caused by a bacterial infection. It may appear as a painful red swelling and sometimes fills with pus. Poor hygiene, irritation from shaving, or minor skin injury can increase the risk of such infections. Consult a doctor if the swelling becomes very painful, increases in size, or does not improve.
