I pass urine in my bed at night while sleeping. What could be the cause, and how can it be stopped or prevented?
Passing urine in bed during sleep is called nocturnal enuresis (bedwetttng). It can happen for different reasons depending on a person?s age and health. In children, it is usually because bladder control is still developing. In adults, it may be related to conditions such as urinary infection, diabetes, an overactive bladder, stress, very deep sleep, or intake of caffeine or alcohol. In some cases, constipation or certain medicines may also play a role. To manage and prevent this problem, it is important to first identify the cause. Reduce fluid intake in the evening, especially tea, coffee, and fizzy drinks. Make sure to empty the bladder before going to bed. Maintain a regular toilet schedule during the day and avoid holding urine for long periods. If constipation is present, it should be treated, as it may worsen symptoms. Pelvic floor exercises may help improve bladder control over time. In some cases, a doctor may suggest alarms or medicines to help control bedwetting. If this problem starts suddenly, occurs frequently, or develops in adulthood, it is important to consult a doctor or urologist to rule out underlying conditions such as diabetes or infection.
