Since X-rays only show bones, they cannot detect soft tissue injuries. An MRI is indeed a very reasonable and helpful next step. It will allow us to look closely at your ligaments, tendons, and cartilage to see if there is any underlying tear or sprain causing this delayed healing. Please consult your doctor to discuss getting an MRI.
