What is the role of Disopyramide tablets in HOCM associated with mitral regurgitation, and how effective is this treatment for symptom control?
Disopyramide tablets are sometimes used in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) to help reduce obstruction inside the heart and improve symptoms such as chest discomfort, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, or fatigue. In HOCM, the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick and can block blood flow, leaving the heart. This blockage may also worsen mitral regurgitation by affecting the movement of the mitral valve. Disopyramide works by reducing the force of heart muscle contraction, which may decrease the obstruction and indirectly reduce leakage through the mitral valve in some patients. Many people experience improvement in symptoms and exercise tolerance when the medicine is combined with other heart medications. However, the response can vary depending on the severity of the obstruction and valve leakage. Dry mouth, constipation, difficulty passing urine, or rhythm-related side effects may occur in some people, so regular heart monitoring is important during treatment. Worsening breathlessness, fainting, chest pain, or irregular heartbeat may suggest the condition needs closer cardiac evaluation and treatment adjustment.
