Severe ear pain during a heavy cold in children can occur when the infection or mucus blocks the tube connecting the ear and the nose. This pressure buildup may lead to ear inflammation or an ear infection, which can cause sharp pain, irritability, poor sleep, fever, or reduced hearing. Younger children often develop ear discomfort after a cough, cold, or nasal congestion. Some children feel better with warm compresses over the ear, enough fluids, proper rest, and keeping the nose clear with saline drops or by using steam in the room. Doctors may advise paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce pain and fever. If a bacterial ear infection is suspected, antibiotic treatment may sometimes be needed after examination. Keeping the child hydrated and avoiding exposure to smoke or dust may also help with recovery. Seek medical care if there is ear discharge, high fever, swelling around the ear, breathing difficulty, or if the child becomes unusually sleepy or inactive.
