One side of my nose often feels blocked, making it difficult to breathe properly. What should I do?
A blocked feeling on one side of the nose is a common problem and can happen due to allergies, sinus infection, a cold, dust exposure, swelling inside the nose, or a bend in the nasal wall called a deviated septum. Some people notice that one side feels more blocked at night or during weather changes. In mild cases, simple home care can help. Breathing steam from warm water for a few minutes, drinking enough fluids, and using saline nasal drops or saline spray can reduce dryness and clear the nose naturally. Try to avoid smoke, strong perfumes, dust, and very cold air if they make the blockage worse. Sleeping with the head slightly elevated may also help improve breathing. Do not use nasal decongestant sprays for many days without medical advice because overuse can worsen blockage later. If you also have sneezing, itching, or a watery nose, allergies may be the cause, and a doctor may suggest anti-allergy treatment. If the blockage continues for many weeks, happens only on one side regularly, causes headaches or facial pain, leads to snoring, bleeding, or difficulty sleeping, it is important to consult an ENT specialist. The doctor may examine the inside of the nose to check for sinus problems, nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. Most causes can be treated effectively once the exact reason is identified.
