My child has had a fever, vomiting, and loose motions since today. There have been 2 to 3 episodes of vomiting and 4 to 5 loose motions along with fever. What can help my child feel better and prevent dehydration?
Fever with vomiting and loose motions in children is commonly caused by stomach infection, food contamination, viral illness, or indigestion. Repeated vomiting and diarrhoea can quickly lead to dehydration, especially in young children, so maintaining fluid intake is very important. Signs of dehydration may include dry mouth, reduced urination, unusual sleepiness, crying without tears, or weakness. Giving small amounts of fluids frequently may help prevent dehydration better than forcing large amounts at once. Oral rehydration solution, coconut water, rice water, or clear fluids may help replace lost salts and water. Soft foods like rice, banana, curd, khichdi, or toast are usually easier to tolerate until the stomach settles. Avoid oily foods, spicy foods, packaged juices, and soft drinks because they may worsen loose motions. Proper rest and keeping the child cool during a fever may also help improve comfort. Medicines for vomiting, diarrhoea, or fever should only be used after proper medical advice because treatment depends on the child?s age and overall condition. Seek medical care if vomiting becomes continuous, the child stops drinking fluids, develops severe weakness, has blood in stool, breathing difficulty, or reduced urination.
