Faricimab

About Faricimab

Faricimab belongs to the class of anti-angiogenic ophthalmic agents, used to improve and maintain vision in diabetic macular edema (DME), neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), or macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in adults. Neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DMO), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) are chronic eye conditions characterized by the growth of abnormal blood vessels beneath the retina and macula, leading to fluid accumulation, swelling, and vision impairment.

Faricimab contains Faricimab, which works by blocking the activity of proteins known as angiopoietin-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor A. Excessive levels of these proteins can cause abnormal blood vessel growth, damaging normal vessels and leading to retinal leakage, swelling, and vision problems in conditions like nAMD, DMO, and RVO. By attaching to these proteins, Faricimab blocks their actions and prevents abnormal vessel growth, leakage, and swelling. Faricimab can prevent further damage, slow disease progression, and potentially improve vision.

A healthcare professional will administer Faricimab. The common side effects of Faricimab include conjunctival hemorrhage (blood in the white part of the eye), intraocular pressure, eye pain, intraocular inflammation or irritation, blurred vision and increased lacrimation. Most of these adverse effects go away gradually over time on their own. If any of these symptoms worsen or continue, consult a doctor.

Faricimab should be avoided if you are allergic to it or any other components present in it. Before receiving Faricimab, inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney disease, ocular or periocular infection and active intraocular inflammation. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should inform the physician before starting treatment with Faricimab.

Uses of Faricimab

Faricimab is used to improve and maintain vision in neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), or macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The detailed uses of Faricimab are as follows: • nAMD Treatment: Faricimab treats neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), an ongoing disease causing central vision loss and impacting daily activities, by targeting VEGF and Ang-2 to slow vision loss and preserve vision. • Diabetic macular edema (DME): Faricimab treats Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), an eye disease caused by diabetes that can lead to vision loss, by dual-action targeting of VEGF and Ang-2, reducing edema and preserving vision. • Macular edema followed by retinal vein occlusion: Faricimab is also used for treating macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO), aiming to reduce edema and improve vision.

Medicinal Benefits

Faricimab contains Faricimab, which works by blocking the activity of proteins known as angiopoietin-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor A. Excessive levels of these proteins can cause abnormal blood vessel growth, damaging normal vessels and leading to retinal leakage, swelling, and vision problems in conditions like nAMD, DMO, and RVO. By attaching to these proteins, Faricimab can block their actions and prevent abnormal vessel growth, leakage, and swelling. Faricimab can prevent further damage, slow disease progression, and potentially improve vision.

Disease/Condition Glossary

Neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD): Wet age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is a chronic eye condition where abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, causing fluid leaks, swelling, and vision loss. Age, genetics, and smoking contribute to its development. Symptoms include blurred vision, distorted lines, and dark spots.

Diabetic macular edema (DME): Diabetes macular edema (DME) is swelling in the macula, or central, part of the retina of eye. It occurs when high blood sugar levels affect the blood vessels in eyes causing fluid leakage into the macula. This leads to symptoms such as blurred or distorted vision, dark spots, and difficulty distinguishing colors.

Macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO): Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a partial or total blockage in a vein that drains blood from retina, certain health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart problems, can cause vision problems. Symptoms may include dark spots, blurry or distorted vision, and gradual vision loss.

FAQs

Faricimab is an anti-angiogenic ophthalmic agent used to improve and maintain vision in neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), or macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in adults.

Faricimab contains Faricimab, which works by blocking angiopoietin-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby reducing the abnormal blood vessel growth and damage to normal vessels. This helps manage conditions like neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), or macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO) effectively.

Please inform your doctor before taking other medicines while being treated with Faricimab. Your doctor will determine which medicines should not be taken along with Faricimab.
