About Interferon Alfa 2b

Interferon Alfa 2b is an anti-cancer medicine used in the treatment of hairy cell leukaemia, follicular leukaemia, malignant leukaemia, AIDS-Related Kaposi’s Sarcoma, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in combination with anthracycline-containing chemotherapy medicine, chronic hepatitis B and C. Cancer is a disease where the cells grow abnormally and divide uncontrollably. It can also be used when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

Interferon Alfa 2b contains Interferon alpha 2b as an active ingredient, which belongs to the class of immunomodulators. It works by inhibiting the abnormal growth of cancer cells. It also helps reduce the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body.

Interferon Alfa 2b may cause certain side effects such as flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea, fatigue, nausea, headache, dizziness, vomiting, tiredness, and injection site reactions. If the side effects persist or bother you, consult your doctor. Interferon Alfa 2b will be administered by a trained doctor. Hence, do not self-administer.

Breastfeeding should be avoided when on treatment with Interferon Alfa 2b.

Uses of Interferon Alfa 2b

Interferon Alfa 2b is used in the treatment of Follicular cancer, Hairy cell carcinoma, Malignant melanoma, AIDS-Related Kaposi's Sarcoma, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Chronic hepatitis B, and Chronic hepatitis C. The detailed uses of Interferon Alfa 2b are as follows:
• Chronic Hepatitis B: Interferon Alfa 2b is used to manage chronic hepatitis B by stimulating the immune system to suppress viral replication. This helps reduce liver inflammation and lowers the risk of long-term liver damage. It's often used when other treatments aren't ideal or effective.
• Chronic Hepatitis C: Interferon Alfa 2b is used alongside other antivirals, this medication enhances the body's antiviral defenses to lower HCV levels. It may slow the disease's progression and improve liver health over time.
• Hairy Cell Leukemia: Interferon Alfa 2b slows the growth of abnormal white blood cells in this rare blood cancer. It's especially helpful in patients not eligible for more aggressive treatments. Over time, it can improve blood counts and disease control.
• Follicular Lymphoma: In this slow-growing type of lymphoma, Interferon Alfa 2b is used to inhibit cancer cell activity. It may be given alone or with chemotherapy to improve response rates. It prolongs remission and helps maintain long-term disease control.
• Malignant Melanoma: Interferon Alfa 2b reduces the risk of melanoma recurrence in high-risk patients. It works by boosting immune activity against cancer cells. Though side effects can be intense, it offers survival benefits for some.
• Kaposi’s Sarcoma (AIDS-related): Especially helpful in AIDS patients, Interferon Alfa 2b helps reduce the size and spread of cancerous skin lesions. The drug activates the immune system to attack tumor cells. Its effectiveness may vary depending on immune status and HIV treatment.
• Genital Warts (HPV-related): Interferon Alfa 2b used to treat stubborn or recurrent warts caused by human papillomavirus. It enhances immune recognition of infected cells to clear them more effectively. Usually used in patients who haven’t responded to topical therapies.
• Multiple Myeloma: Interferon Alfa 2b inhibits the growth of malignant plasma cells. It may be used to maintain remission in select cases. More often, it complements other chemotherapy or immunotherapy strategies.
• Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: In some types of NHL, Interferon Alfa 2b acts as an immune modulator to inhibit cancer development. It may extend progression-free survival when used alongside chemotherapy. Its use depends on the subtype and stage of disease.

    Patients Concern

    Disease/Condition Glossary

Malignant Melanoma: Melanoma is a type of skin cancer in which the cancer cells grow in melanocytes. It is mainly caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun. Malignant melanoma is common in fair-skinned and freckled individuals. It results in mole formation, typically on the skin of the face.

Hepatitis C Virus Infection: It is a contagious infection caused by the hepatitis C virus affecting the liver. This infection spreads from person to person through blood contact (being pricked with a contaminated needle or using a razor), intimate contact with the infected person, direct contact with infected blood, or contact with any other personal items with leftovers of infected fluid or even from mother to baby during birth. The symptoms may not appear immediately. Some may take between 2 to 12 weeks to appear. Few people may have mild to moderate symptoms such as dark urine, loss of appetite, fever, joint pain, or stomach discomfort. The complications of untreated chronic hepatitis C include liver cancer or liver cirrhosis (scarring).

Hepatitis B Virus Infection: It is a serious contagious infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus affecting the liver. It can be an acute (an infected person may be sick for only a few days) or chronic infection (it develops slowly but progresses to a serious lifelong infection). This infection spreads from person to person through blood contact (being pricked with a contaminated needle, using a razor), intimate contact with the infected person, direct contact with infected blood, or contact with any other personal items with leftovers of infected fluid or even from mother to baby during birth. Interferon Alfa 2b is used to treat HBV infection.

Follicular lymphoma: It is a type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma with slow-growing (chronic) cancer with abnormal growth of B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells that help fight infection. This results in the buildup of too many B lymphocytes in the blood, lymph nodes, bone marrow, and spleen.

Hairy cell leukemia: It is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the bone marrow and blood. It increases the number of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). The symptoms include fever, enlarged liver, bone or joint pain, shortness of breath, weakness, and bleeding from gums or bruises.
